There is no denying that the work of an accountant is no child’s play. It is not everybody’s cup of tea to deal with financial resources, profits, balance sheets, accounts, ledgers, like a whiz and assess the profits and loss of a company.
It requires an analytical sharp mind, sound knowledge of accounting principles and tonnes of tenacity to clear all the exams and the mandatory work experience period before you can take it up as a profession.
But for those still reading this, and not intimidated by all the work, it guarantees all the perks of a profession that earns you big money and respect. Widely perceived as one of the well cushioned jobs in the industry, if you are not cowed down by all it entails, and are willing to put in the work and the effort, rest assured you will be among the smug faces in the high school and college reunions.
Being an accountant does not mean that you only have to record financial transactions in ledgers and balance accounts but calls for a lot more. To some it may be boring and monotonous, but then again, not everyone can be an accountant.
If you love numbers and if you love to delve into the financial matters concerning a company/firm, you will enjoy the profession and the assessment, analysis, auditing, will become something you will look forward to. Also, if you like the work, but don’t want to work with big firms and companies, there is always the option of working with smaller companies or working as consultant on contractual basis. Every company, however big or small, cannot do without an accountant in order to properly to manage their accounts, taxes etc.
Finance is the most important resource of a company, so dealing with finances automatically puts you in a position of power. Working in the accounts department definitely earns you respect and influence. The power of assessing the financial health of a company, influencing decisions like salaries, cutting down expenses and bringing cost effectiveness is second to none, and is something that all accountants will enjoy. You would also be required to deal with a number of other aspects relating to finance and that makes the job even more interesting.
Coming to the most important perk perhaps the all important for most the pay. The average salary of an accountant is equivalent to what it is in similar professions, and the good news is that most companies pay at least some stipend or a small salary to trainees too so at least your basic expenses are taken care of.
Accountants are indispensable in any organisation, however big or small; so that means that there are lots of job opportunities that will keep cropping up for an accountant. Even in times of recession, the services of an accountant can hardly be called off so you can rest assured that an accountant will always find work. Working on a contractual basis has the added advantage of giving you the liberty to take time off for holidays and sabbaticals whenever you think you need a break.
So, if all the hard work and the frequent accusations of accountancy being boring do not bother you, and you see numbers and finances as challenges you are up for, accountancy is the ideal profession for you!
