Individuals and companies often embark on numerous projects and processes. It is often necessary to take a moment to evaluate whatever process one went through to be able to assess whether they are on the right track or whether some amendments need to me made. The process of evaluation is known as an audit. A professional who is skilled and is trained to carry out this process is known as an auditor.
Many companies and businesses have gotten into trouble over the years simply because they lack the ability to evaluate their practices and procedures. An auditor may have skill and proficiency in a number of fields ranging from quality management to environmental issues and even project management. However, the most common duty of an auditor has got to do with accounting.
An Auditor is usually meant to ensure that information that has been provided by a company is correct and is very reliable and spot on. Every company usually has its internal controls well laid out and its finances well mapped out. However, an auditor provides the authorities with a true insight into the activities of the company with particular reference to the validity of the information that the company has provided as pertaining to its processes.
In the field of accounting and taxation, auditing is one of the vital parts that will ensure that a company is not put under scrutiny for lying to the authorities on their operations. Companies that are Publicly-traded are also liable to being audited and every now and again, an auditor will have to assess the operations of these companies so that they can confirm that the financial standing of the company is as relevant to the operation of that company. Over the years, there have been many types of auditors who have worked in numerous professions, each of them having a particular skill that they bring to the playing field.
An internal auditor is usually hired by a company to study the internal controls of the company and to make sure that any issues to do with financial reporting are well scrutinized. In the case of Publicly-traded companies, an internal auditor reports directly to the Board of Directors. On the other hand, consultant auditors are simply hired on a contractual basis by a company to carry out some kind of assessment of the company after a particular trading period. Sometimes, a consultant auditor is totally free of the control of the company so they carry out their activities as per their discretion. In some cases however, the consultant auditor works according to the guidelines set out by the company even though when all is said and done, they have to work according to the international rules and regulations set out for auditors.
Another kind of auditor who usually works for a company and helps to monitor and maintain its operations is a quality auditor. In the field of Energy, an auditor basically has the duty of assessing the rate at which the energy is utilized, being sure to evaluate and properly allocate the levels of energy flows as well as preservation that are involved when a project is embarked on.
In terms of project management, an auditor can carry out one of two activities; either make health audits which involve looking at the ability of a project to achieve as per its current status or regulatory audits which involve making sure that a particular project is being carried out in line with the rules and regulations that bind it.
