How To Become a SEO?

I Have a question about becoming a search engine optimiser or SEO in short. I've been interested in SEO for a while and I have a friend that runs a professional company. He is doing web design and that sort of stuff but he knows nothing of SEO nor are any of his sites very search engine friendly. Some of the websites he has done look very nice but that does not matter if people do not know it is there. I'm kind of starting to develop a general interest in SEO and maybe down the road work with him and start a small SEO Consulting service on the side for him. Where should I start?

I remember seeing an advertisement for SEO online training course, would anybody know any of SEO training courses I could take.
