Animal Care Course - Level 2

The Animal Care Level 2 Course is designed to provide you with all the basic skills and knowledge to enable you to successfully understand the care which a wide range of animals need. From horses to hamsters, from parrots to pole cats, we cover all the key issues that you, as an animal enthusiast, are likely to need to know to ensure that the animal thrives in a happy, hygienic and suitable environment. We also tell you how to protect yourself from what could be dangerous circumstances so that neither the animal nor you are hurt.

On successful completion of this course, students will receive an accredited Level 2 Certificate Award.

The Animal Care Home Study Courses Are Split Into The Following Units:

Unit One: History & Background

The following topics are covered: Domestication; The classification system; and How to choose the right pet.

Unit Two: Safety, Welfare, Health & Hygiene

The following topics are covered: Safety; Transfer of diseases from animals to humans; Correct handling methods and methods of restraint; Hygiene of an animal’s sleeping area; and Pests and parasites.

Unit Three: Anatomy & Physiology

The following topics are covered: The skeletal and muscular systems; The digestive system; The circulatory and lymphatic systems; The respiratory system; and The nervous system.

Unit Four: Animal First Aid

The following topics are covered: Handling and transport of injured animals; Basic examinations; Shock and its signs; Wounds, burns and fractures; and How to administer medication.

Unit Five: Dogs

The following topics are covered: Different breeds; Nutrition and exercise; Behaviour and training; Grooming and general care; Breeding; and Common Diseases.

Unit Six: Cats

The following topics are covered: Breeds and body types; Nutrition and exercise; Behaviour and training; Grooming and general care; Breeding; and Common Diseases.

Unit Seven: Horses & Ponies

The following topics are covered: Anatomy; Groups and breeds; Nutrition; Housing and exercise; Behaviour and training; Grooming, shoeing and general care; Breeding; and Common Diseases.

Unit Eight: Birds

The following topics are covered: Anatomy; Nutrition and general care; Birds of prey; and Common Diseases.

Unit Nine: Fish

The following topics are covered: Housing and general care; Types of fish; Breeding; and Common Diseases.

Unit Ten: Snakes & Lizards

The following topics are covered: Housing and general care; Types and their requirements; and Common Diseases.

Unit Eleven: Tortoises, Turtles & Terrapins

The following topics are covered: Characteristics and anatomy; Housing and general care; Hibernation; Breeding; and Common Diseases.

Unit Twelve: Insects & Amphibians

The following topics are covered: Handling; Housing; Nutritional requirements; Beetles, centipedes and millipedes; and Frogs and toads.

Unit Thirteen: Hamsters, Gerbil, Rats & Mice

Unit Fourteen: Ferrets & Polecats

Unit Fifteen: Rabbits & Guinea Pigs
