Course Overview – Domestic Electrical New Entrants Package Three
This training package includes the training and qualifications you will need to be a qualified Domestic Electrical Installer and register onto a Domestic Installer Scheme with NICEIC/ELECSA. The price of this course also includes a NICEIC / ELECSA Online Knowledge Assessment (OKA) which is taken upon completion of this training package.
What You’ll Learn
This course will give you training, qualifications, skills and knowledge to enable you to register with the NICEIC, ELECSA on to their domestic installer scheme in order to be able to self-certify your work. This package is a programme of 3 courses over 4 weeks, which will teach you the following:
Course 1 – C&G 4555 – Introduction to Domestic Electrical Installation and Understanding Electrical Installation and Applicable Building Regulations: 10 Days
This is the ideal starting point on the journey to becoming a competent person. The course is delivered using a blended learning approach, mixing up theory and practical, keeping you engaged at all times. This electrical course will give you the practical ability and confidence in the following areas of domestic electrical installation:
- The definition of electric shock
- Ohms Law & Power Triangles
- Identification of earthing systems
- An introduction to legislation surrounding electrical installation in dwellings
- Understanding breaker and cable selection
- Installation of earthing and bonding, Ring circuits, Radial Circuits, Cooker circuits, various lighting circuits.
- Completion of installation certificate
- Understanding basic inspection and testing:
- Continuity of protective conductors
- Continuity of protective conductors radial circuits
- Continuity of protective conductors ring final circuits
- Insulation resistance
- Polarity
- Safe isolation
- Adding additional outlets to a circuit
- Completion of a minor works certificate
Having installed a range of electrical circuits and grasped the practical application process, we have also designed this course to strengthen your understanding of the electrical installation and any implications your installation may have with regard to the Building Regulations. Additional to this you will also cover the practical application of electrical installation in bathrooms, showers and garden areas. In addition, this electrical training course also covers the following units:
- Unit 1: Applicable Building Regulations
- Unit 2: Electrical safety, legislation, regulations, standards & terminology.
- Unit 3: Installation of a garden security light incorporating SWA
- Unit 4: Inspecting, testing and commissioning a domestic single phase circuit.
- Unit 5: Special locations and installations
- Unit 6: Pre-work survey inspection
- Unit 7: Basic understanding of 3 phase
On the final day, you will be required to complete an online multiple-choice exam consisting of 20 questions and lasting 40 minutes. Successful candidates will receive C&G 2393 Level 3 Certificate in the Building Regulations for Electrical Installation in Dwellings
This 10-day introductory electrical course covers the whole electrical installation process including testing and commissioning your circuit installation to ensure it is safe for you to energise. On completion of this course, you will be adequately prepared to move onto the second part of your course.
Course 2 – C&G 2382-12 (17th Edition): 3 Days
The aim of this 3-day electrical training course is to gain familiarity with the layout, content and application of the BS 7671 (2008) (2011) 17th Edition Regulations. The IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) are the definitive standards for the electrical industry in respect of the safe use and operation of electrical equipment and systems. They form the requirements and operating criteria for the UK and correspond to EC standards and are recognised by British Standards (BS 7671).
There are 7 units that make up the 17th Edition course:
- Part 1: Scope, object and fundamental principles
- Part 2: Definitions
- Part 3: Assessment of general characteristics
- Part 4: Protection for safety
- Part 5: Selection and erection of equipment
- Part 6: Inspection and testing
- Part 7: Special installations or locations
- Part 8: Appendices
This course does include the latest amendments such as:
- Electromagnetic Disturbance
- Surge Protection
- Medical locations
- Operating and Maintenance Gangways
On the afternoon of the 3rd day, you will be required to sit a 2 hour online multiple choice, open book exam consisting of 60 questions.
Course 3 – City & Guilds 2392 – Level 2 Fundamental Inspection and Testing: 5 Days
This qualification has been developed in conjunction with the electrical industry to provide less experienced candidates with an introduction of how to inspect and test (conduct the initial verification) of electrical installations. This course was also developed as a stepping stone for individuals looking to move on to level 3 Inspection and Testing qualifications (as this is often a difficult subject for even the most experienced of electricians). This 2392-10 Inspection and testing qualification not only helps you to fully understand testing, it also provides you with a qualification and certificate to show you are competent to undertake the work. It is an essential skill and qualification to have for anyone undertaking electrical installations. This course is a mix of theory (with online exam) and practical training in preparation for an assessment. The course covers:

Upon Completion
NICEIC / ELECSA Online Knowledge Assessment: If your intention is to register with the NICEIC or ELECSA then you may be required to take an Online Knowledge Assessment (OKA) before you can move forward with your application. We offer the assessment as part of this package free of charge.
This Online Knowledge Assessment will make sure you have the skills and knowledge required to pass the full assessment process undertaken by NICEIC/ELECSA . This exam is a way of making sure only those who have the right skills and knowledge move forward with the application process ensuring any gaps in your knowledge are addressed before you proceed.
Once you have passed, you will receive a certificate which can be used to prove to the NICEIC that you are fine to move ahead with their assessment process.
Their process will generally cover:
- Ensuring you have all the relevant paperwork, insurance, calibration certificates etc
- Assessment of 1 minor job (can be done in own home)
- Assessment of 1 major notifiable job (on customer premises)
The inspector will quiz you on the regulations, watch you inspect and test and make sure your installation meets the building and wiring regulations.
How You’ll Learn
Course 1 is a real mix of practical and theory sessions. The practical aspects give you the opportunity to work in areas building various circuits, the theory sessions ensure that you understand why you are building these circuits and how to ensure safety.
Course 2 is entirely classroom-based and has an online exam on day 3 which is open book.
Course 3 is again a mix of practical and theory and the qualification requires you to undertake an online exam and also a practical assessment.
NICEIC / ELECSA Online Knowledge Assessment: The test itself is an online multiple choice assessment. It will test your knowledge predominantly on inspection and testing, 17th edition, Part P regulations and installation. There is no set time limit but we estimate around 1.5 hours is sufficient time and this is what we will allocate.

Courses Open To You After
From this course you can, if you choose, progress to C&G 2394/5 (Initial Verification and Periodic Inspection & Testing). If you would like to move towards becoming a fully qualified Electrician in order to work in Commercial/Industrial premises, the C&G 2365 at level 2 would be a very good starting point for you.
Additional Info
Once you have completed this package of learning, you will be able to undertake notifiable and non-notifiable work. This package is specifically for individuals who are looking to register with NICEIC/ELECSA.
This package of learning will ensure competence so if you would prefer to undertake the work, but enlist the help of your local Building Control (rather than registering onto a scheme), that would also be acceptable. You must be competent to do the work and Building control will need to know you’re competent – they do this by talking to you and asking for your qualifications.
