The Health & Social Care Course(QCF) – Level 2 Diploma is suitable for any individual currently working as a care provider or wanting to start a career in the care sector.

Health and social care can cover a wide range of service users who have different levels and types of care. It is very important to understand the specific roles that must be undertaken as a carer and this course explores both the mental and physical support of service users.

Students can expect to learn more about the role of the health and social care worker, the key principles of safeguarding and protecting in health and social care, the causes and spread of infection, the duty of care in health and social care settings, and much more!

On successful completion of this course, students will receive an accredited Level 2 QCF Diploma Qualification with 46 Credits.

Work Placement Requirements: Students will require a work placement to complete this course. It is recommended that students have the placement for the duration of their studies. This could be a full-time position or a voluntary position of 1 or 2 mornings, afternoons or days per week. The placement needs to be sufficient to enable students to gather the required workplace evidence for each of the course units detailed below, and the work will need to be signed off by an appropriate person (Manager or Supervisor) within the organisation.

Students who don’t have a suitable placement should consider one of the new CACHE (RQF) Qualifications:

  1. Health & Social Care (RQF) – Level 2 Certificate CACHE Course
  2. Health & Social Care (RQF) – Level 2 Extended Diploma CACHE Course

The Health & Social Care (QCF) – Level 2 Diploma Course includes the following units:

Unit 1 – The role of the health & social care worker

The learning objectives of this module are to: Understand working relationships in health and social care, Be able to work in ways that are agreed with the employer, Be able to work in partnership with others.

Unit 2 – Introduction to communication in health and social care settings

The learning objectives of this module are to: Understand why communication is important in the work setting, Be able to meet the communication and language needs, wishes and preferences of an individual, Be able to reduce barriers to communications, Be able to apply principles and practices relating to confidentiality at work.

Unit 3 – Support Individuals with specific communication needs

The learning objectives of this module are to Understand specific communication needs and factors affecting them, Be able to contribute to establishing the nature of specific communication needs of individuals and ways to address them, Be able to interact with individuals using their preferred communication, Be able to promote communication between individuals and others, Know how to support the use of communication, technology and aids, Be able to review an individual’s communication needs and the support provided to address them.

Unit 4 – Implement person-centred approaches in health & social care

The learning objectives of this module are to: Understand person-centred approaches for care and support, Be able to work in a person-centred way, Be able to establish consent when providing care or support, Be able to encourage active participation, Be able to support the individual’s right to make choices, Be able to promote individuals’ well-being.

Unit 5 – Principles of safeguarding and protection in health & social care

The learning objectives of this module are to: Know how to recognise signs of abuse, Know how to respond to suspected or alleged abuse, Understand the national and local context of safeguarding and protection from abuse, Understand ways to reduce the likelihood of abuse, Know how to recognise and report unsafe practice.

Unit 6 – Support individuals to eat and drink

The learning objectives of this module are to: Be able to support individuals to make choices about food and drink, Be able to prepare to provide support for eating and drinking, Be able to provide support for eating and drinking, Be able to clear away after food and drink, Be able to monitor eating and drinking and the support provided.

Unit 7 – The principles of infection prevention and control

The learning objectives of this module are to: Understand roles and responsibilities in the prevention and control of infection, Understand legislation and policies relating to prevention and control of infections, Understand systems and procedures relating to the prevention and control of infection, Understand the importance of risk assessment in relation to the prevention and control of infection, Understand the importance of using personal protective equipment (PPE) in the prevention and control of infection, Understand the importance of good personal hygiene in the prevention and control of infection.

Unit 8 – Causes & spread of infection

The learning objectives of this module are to: Understand the causes of infection, Understand the transmission of infection.

Unit 9 – Cleaning, decontamination and waste management

The learning objectives of this module are to: Understand how to maintain a clean environment to prevent the spread of infection, Understand the principles and steps of the decontamination process, Understand the importance of good waste management practice in the prevention of the spread of infection.

Unit 10 – Move & position individuals in accordance with their plan of care

The learning objectives of this module are to Understand anatomy and physiology in relation to moving and positioning individuals, Understand legislation and agreed ways of working when moving and positioning individuals, Be able to minimise risk before moving and positioning individuals, Be able to prepare individuals before moving and positioning, Be able to move and position an individual, Know when to seek advice from and/or involve others when moving and positioning an individual.

Unit 11 – Support individuals to meet personal care needs

The learning objectives of this module are to: Be able to work with individuals to identify their needs and preferences in relation to personal care, Be able to provide support for personal care safely, Be able to support individuals to use the toilet, Be able to support individuals to maintain personal hygiene, Be able to support individuals to manage their personal appearance, Be able to monitor and report on support for personal care.

Unit 12 – Contribute to the support of positive risk-taking for individuals

The learning objectives of this module are to: Know the importance of risk taking in everyday life, Understand the importance of positive, person-centred risk assessment, Know how legislation and policies are relevant to positive risk-taking, Be able to support individuals about making informed choices about taking risks, Be able to contribute to the support of individuals to manage identified risks, Understand duty of care in relation to supporting risk-taking.

Unit 13 – Handle information in health & social care settings

The learning objectives of this module are to: Understand the need for secure handling of information in health and social care settings, Know how to access support for handling information, Be able to handle information in accordance with agreed ways of working.

Unit 14 – Contribute to health and safety in health and social care

The learning objectives of this module are to: Understand own responsibilities, and the responsibilities of others relating to health and safety in the work setting, Understand the use of risk assessments in relation to health and safety, Understand procedures for responding to accidents and sudden illness, Be able to reduce the spread of infection, Be able to move and handle equipment and other objects safely, Know how to handle hazardous substances and materials, Understand how to promote fire safety in the work setting, Be able to implement security measures in the work setting, Know how to manage own stress.

Unit 15 – Introduction to duty of care in health and social care settings

The learning objectives of this module are to: Understand the implications of duty of care, Understand the support available for addressing dilemmas that may arise about, Duty of care, Know how to respond to complaints.

Unit 16 – Introduction to equality and inclusion in health & social care

The learning objectives of this module are to: Understand the importance of equality and inclusion, Be able to work in an inclusive way, Know how to access information, advice and support about diversity, equality and inclusion.

Unit 17 – Introduction to personal development in health & social care settings

The learning objectives of this module are to: Understand what is required for competence in own work role, Be able to reflect on own work activities, Be able to agree to a personal development plan, Be able to develop own knowledge, skills and understanding.
