Introduction

All Safety Management Systems (SMS) require a systematic organised, thorough, and competent assessment of how well efficient and effective the systems are working. The Safety systems must not only reflect the aspirations of the Company but also be in line with the National Legislative requirements.

A competent Auditor will be able to critically examine the SMS and identify weakness and suggest improvements where necessary. A safety audit is a systematic critical examination of an organisation’s health and safety, involving a structured process including the use of questions and the examination of documentation, to collect independent information with the aim of assessing the effectiveness and reliability of the system.

Work environment Inspections are undertaken by supervisors and involve the physical inspection of equipment and activities of a workplace looking both for unsafe conditions and unsafe acts. The results of Inspections result in short reports of findings made and recommendations for enhancements.
