Understanding Eating Disorders Course

The Understanding Eating Disorders – Level 2 Course is designed for people who wish to gain an understanding of working with Eating Disorders, and the basic skills required to work with such complex conditions. No prior knowledge is required.

On successful completion of this course, students will receive an accredited Level 2 Certificate Award.

Objectives Of The Eating Disorders Course

After studying this course, students will:

  1. Have an understanding of Eating Disorders
  2. Understand possible causes
  3. Have Knowledge of the different treatments available
  4. Be able to list sources of help and advice in a range of situations
  5. Have a clear understanding of how to work with these complex conditions

Unit 1 – Types of Eating Disorders

The following topics are covered: Anorexia Nervosa; Bulimia; and Binge Eating Disorder.

Unit 2 – Classifications

The following topics are covered: DSM; and ICD.

Unit 3 – Diagnosis

The following topics are covered: Anorexia; Restricting type; Binge eating type; Bulimia; Binge eating disorder; and Eating disorder not otherwise specified.

Unit 4 – Complications

The following topics are covered: Side effects; and Complications.

Unit 5 – Who is Affected?

The following topics are covered: Men; Women; Children; and The Elderly.

Unit 6 – Causes of Eating Disorders

The following topics are covered: Psychological; Biological; Social; Patient perspectives; Media and magazines; Self-esteem; Childhood experiences; Healing the past; Addiction; Dependent; Anxiety; Sleep; Self-harm; Friends and family; Personality disorders; Depression; Stress; & Suicide.

Unit 7 – Treatment Options

The following topics are covered: Psychodynamic psychotherapy; Cognitive Behavioural Therapy; Interpersonal therapy; Group therapy; and Family therapy.

Unit 8 – Information for Friends & Family

The following topics are covered: Support for caregivers; Parents; Review; Methods; Findings; Daughter-directed activities; and Construction of Anorexia.

Unit 9 – Research

The following topics are covered: The Pro-Ana community; Participant observation and Internet research ethics; Method; Analytic procedure; Support; Group identities and Negative Attributions.
