Veterinary Support Assistant Course - Level 3

The Veterinary Support Assistant – Level 3 Course is designed for students wanting to gain an understanding of the skills required for becoming a veterinary assistant. The course would be suitable for those with an interest in veterinary nursing or for those interested in becoming a veterinary nurse assistant.

The course aims to give an understanding of the different roles within a veterinary team and will cover the legal and ethical system in which they work. It will also give students an introduction to the anatomy and physiology of dogs and cats as well as giving a working knowledge of Health and Safety within a veterinary practice. Other important topics covered are infection control and the different veterinary equipment used within a practice.

On successful completion of this course, students will receive an accredited Level 3 Certificate award.

This Veterinary Assistant Home Study Course Includes The Following Units:

Unit 1: The Roles of Members of the Veterinary Team

The following Topics are covered: Roles and responsibilities of Veterinary Surgeons; Roles of the Veterinary Nurse; Roles of the Student Veterinary Nurse; Essentials of the legal system; and Individual character and conscience

Unit 2: Anatomy & Physiology of Dogs and Cats

The following Topics are covered: Animal cell structure and cell function; Basic structure and function of the nervous system; The endocrine system; The digestive system; The urinary system; The respiratory system; The cardiovascular system; and The circulatory system.

Unit 3: Health & Safety within the Veterinary Practice

The following Topics are covered: Principles of health and safety; Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) 2013; Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) 2002; Hazardous Waste Regulations, 2005; and Manual Handling Regulations, 1992.

Unit 4: Infection Control in the Veterinary Practice

The following Topics are covered: The role of infection in animal and human health; Principles of disease transmission in veterinary practice; How to maintain a clean clinical environment; and Main groups of disinfectants.

Unit 5: Veterinary Nursing Support of Diagnostic Techniques

The following Topics are covered: Running a laboratory in a veterinary practice; Emergency procedures; General safety measures; How to collect and prepare urine, faecal and blood samples; How to carry out common laboratory tests; and Test results.

Unit 6: Understanding Veterinary Pharmacy

The following Topics are covered: Principles of pharmacy stock management; The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971; Principles of safe dispensing; Medication terms used in Pharmacology; Absorption rate; and Drug formulations
