Bus drivers are an essential piece of public transportation models in most cities. Bus drivers need to be able to stick to given routes, learn alternatives to routes when roads are closed and perform well under pressure. .
Education
Bus drivers do not need a formal education to be able to drive buses. Bus drivers in certain locations will be required to be able to pass a driving test and course (which could be as little as 40 accumulative hours) with the vehicles that they will be operating. In UK, you need to have a full passenger carrying vehicle PCV driving licence to operate buses 9 to 16 passenger seats and category D1 and a category D licence to operate larger buses.
Screening
Bus driver screening is very important. People with a criminal background or a bad driving record will not be eligible for a bus driver position. Bus drivers with mental illness or disabilities may not be eligible for employment due to various risk factors involved with stress on the job. The restrictions on bus drivers increase even more when the driver will be operating school buses. Bus drivers which have passed screening may be eligible for employment but future events on their driving or criminal records could cause automatic termination of their position for government bus driving jobs.
Medical Examination
Many bus drivers will need to have all of their vaccinations, be free of infectious diseases and test negative with drug testing. This will help to reduce the chances of spreading disease as well as lowering the incidence of accidents due to driver errors while intoxicated. Random drug tests are administered throughout the year and annual exams may be scheduled or required for bus drivers to remain employed. Any refusal to take a medical exam or drug test may be grounds for termination of a bus driver.
Recruitment Agencies
Using a recruitment agency is not necessary for a bus driver to be able to find a company to drive for. A recruitment agency simply has contacts and contracts with various transportation and transit providers and may be able to place eligible drivers with companies much quicker. Experience will always help existing drivers land job opportunities but those who have not had much experience if at all can still be placed.
Finding Jobs
Bus drivers are needed in many locations, especially in larger cities where many buses are required for proper public transit and transportation. Jobs may also be available for charter drivers which may be required to travel great distances for their jobs. Calling local bus companies, visiting the headquarters and filling out a preliminary resume, application for work and other required paperwork can help to boost the processing of employment opportunities.
Regardless of the type of bus driver you may plan on becoming, it is important to get the necessary training and licensing needed to be able to be eligible for a bus driving position. Read more here:
