Painting, in terms of home construction and decorating, is best learned under the supervision of a professional painter or contractor. Some schools offer programs in general building skills, which may include painting, but nothing beats on the job training.
Also, some building supply stores offer workshops for consumers. These would be good to investigate.

Art is all around you.It is not only in the ability to paint, sketch and draw, but in other media as well. Creating a sculpture takes the skill of an artist. Abstract painting, or creating clay models is a form of art. Art is actually all around you, in every shape and form. Take the time to look at your surroundings in a different manner. Look at a tree, it is not even, it is not straight, it is not brown. It has texture, and shading. Most importantly: no two objects are alike.

Apply for a professional license from the state's office under contracting and construction regulations. Take the state examination, which tests your painting skills. Upon successful completion, the state will give you a license at a fee; the fee and the tests vary from state to state.

You can become a contract painter (contractor) and work freely by yourself if you know what you are doing. Just set up a business site, business cards, and spread the word.

This. I know a few people in my own family who do this. They do small home repairs as well. They are able to charge less than the big corporate businesses out there so they tend to have a fair amount of business year round.

Holding a license under said profession is obviously going to look better and make you more. It is also more professional.
What approach are you looking to make? Do you need training?
