The Autism for Educators – Level 3 Course aims to develop your understanding of autism and gives anybody in an education capacity the ability to be effective when working with Autistic individuals. More than 1 in 100 children now are diagnosed with autism, although this figure is increasing all the time and it is likely that many more children remain undiagnosed.
This means that autism is found in most schools. Larger schools will have several children with autism at any given time. As awareness increases and diagnostic criteria change, it is likely that all classrooms will have at least one child with autism in future.
Children on the autistic spectrum think and experience the world and other people differently, resulting in them misinterpreting and misunderstanding. Educators, therefore, need to be aware of how they can best support children on the autistic spectrum to receive an appropriate education, get along with others, and function independently in the world.
Wherever possible, children with autism should be educated in a mainstream school, which means that classrooms must be inclusive, balancing the needs of the autistic child with the needs of others, creating an appropriate learning environment for all. Other children with autism may need to be educated in independent schools, residential schools, special needs schools or schools for gifted children.
On successful completion of this course, students will receive an accredited Level 3 Certificate Award.

- Unit 1: What is Autism?

- Unit 2: Autism and Education

- Unit 3: What is Challenging Behaviour?
The following topics are covered: Autism and behaviour, Behaviours, Defining challenging behaviour, Who displays challenging behaviour? What behaviours are challenging? A social model of disability, Causes of challenging behaviour, Communication and challenging behaviour, The relationship between pain and challenging behaviour, Challenging behaviour and quality of life.
- Unit 4: Learning Styles and Autism
The following topics are covered: Importance of learning style, Neuro-typical children and learning styles, Auditory learning style and autism, Which approach works best?
- Unit 5: Supporting Understanding of Other People
The following topics are covered: Using eyes for communication, Feeling other people’s emotions, Making and maintaining friends and relationships, Understanding other people think differently than us, Understanding facial expressions and body language, Play, One to one settings, Group settings, During class time.
- Unit 6: Supporting Communication
The following topics are covered: Visual communication, Intensive interaction, Verbal communication, Awareness of own communication.
- Unit 7: Building Positive relationships and Achieving Diversity
The following topics are covered: Bullying, Why are children with autism vulnerable to bullying? Positive relationships, The circle of friends approach.
- Unit 8: Supporting Work and the Curriculum
The following topics are covered: The hidden curriculum, The planned curriculum, The National Curriculum, Supporting Literacy, Supporting Numeracy, Support during IT, Support throughout the school day.
Training Course Duration And Support
Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. You also have access to a personal tutor by mail or email for a 12 month period. As the course is self-study you can complete in as little or as long a time as you prefer.
Assessment
You will be assessed on coursework which is detailed in the course materials. Most coursework consists of short paragraph answers to set questions. Your work can be sent back to your course tutor by email or by post.
