Introduction

As concern develops for continually improving the quality of the environment, organisations of all kinds and sizes are increasingly directing their concentration toward the environmental effects of their activities, products, and services.

ERM, environmental risk management refers to the “actual or potential threat of adverse effects on living organisms and the environment by effluents, emissions, wastes, resource depletion, etc., arising out of an organization’s activities.” Now more than ever, organisations all over the world are being forced to take a closer look at their actual and potential influence on the environment.

The environmental performance of an organisation is of significance to internal and external interested parties. Accomplishing sound environmental performance requires organisational commitment to a systematic approach and, to continual improvement of an environmental management system (EMS).
